And I was always insecure, just until I found…

Words often don’t come easy, I never learned, to show the inside of me, oh no my baby

You were always patient. Dragging out what I tried to hide

I was always on the run. Finding out, what I was looking for

And I was always insecure. Until I found…

You, you were always on my mind

You, you’re the one I’m living for

You, you’re my everlasting fire

You’re my always shining star

CHAPTER 7

‘Natasha. Sit down will you? In here. In the lounge.’

Natasha was about to say that she was washing up, but she saw that Helen’s face was serious and she began drying her hands.

‘What is it, Helen?’ Natasha walked into the lounge.

‘Come and sit here.’ Helen indicated the arm chair and Natasha sat in it. Helen sat opposite her on the sofa.

‘I’ve been having a long think and I’ve decided I’m going to join you.’

Natasha looked confused. ‘Join me in what?’

‘On the wagon. I’m going to quit the booze. Completely. Finito!’

‘Well,’ said Natasha raising her eyebrows. ‘I don’t know what to say! That’s wonderful. What made you decide?’

‘If you can’t beat them, join them. Isn’t that what they say? I know it means a lot to you so I’m going to do it.’

Natasha crossed the room and hugged Helen tightly. ‘Thank you,’ she said simply.

‘Er, there is just one little condition,’ Helen said, her voice low and her face fixed. Natasha couldn’t read her expression. A pause followed. None of them spoke. Helen sat back down.

‘I want you to have a last farewell drink with me tonight,’ Helen announced at last.

‘Oh Helen, you can’t ask me to do that. I’ve got several months under my belt…’ Natasha was distraught and flabbergasted.

‘Hear me out,’ interrupted Helen holding up her hand. ‘I’ve had to drink on my own for a long time now. It’s not been any fun, Natasha. I don’t mind giving your new healthy lifestyle a go but I want us to have a night to remember before I do.’

‘You can have a night to remember without me drinking too. We can still have a great night. Sit in the garden. Light the barbecue. It’ll be just the same without me breaking my sobriety.’

‘Oh listen to you. “Breaking my sobriety!” Anyone would think there was a prize for being dry the longest! No one’s keeping a record of how saintly you are being, Natasha.’

‘The prize is my new life. My happiness. Don’t you want that for me too?’

‘We can start it afresh together. You can advise me now you’ve had a bit of practise. We can have the same sobriety date. Just give me this last party night. We’ll do all you said. Have one big last session in the garden and totter off to bed when the moon is out. We’ll toast our new life that starts tomorrow.’

‘We haven’t even got any beer in the house.’ Natasha knew she was weakening. She knew she had given in already.

‘Boot of my car!’ Helen said proudly. ‘Eight cans of your favourite beer.
